Who We Are

Hello — My name is Joan Holtzman and the original concept for VOICE OF THE OWL Is mine.  I thought it would be nice to go online and find a website where the focus is on folks like me, older people who have things to say and share. Wondering whether this idea had any broader appeal, I reached out to friends and colleagues in my cohort and found that it did. Among them were a small group who volunteered to help in various ways. Some had material to contribute, others agreed to review articles sent in by readers; several promised general support and guidance. There are nine of us now and together we call ourselves: The Parliament.  That, of course, is what a group of owls is actually called.

The Owl Parliament

Joan Holtzman – 85, mother, grandmother, native NewYorker. Unretired, never retiring.  By disposition and vocation, a philosopher; also a lover of the arts. For more, check out:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/joan-holtzman-78b80121/

Carol Blitzer – 75, wife of 52 years, mother of two wonderful daughters, grandmother to little Leo; a retired journalist/editor who still writes occasionally; an introvert who loves reading, knitting, quilting, walking with friends.

Roy Blitzer – 77, husband, father, grandfather, and retired educator, author and executive coach.  You can check me out on my website (for more information than you’d ever want to know)  www.rjbconsulting.biz

Andrew Eisner – 73, father, grandfather, semi-retired tech journalist and writer. Excited to help build a library of informative, thought-provoking, and fun content. https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-eisner-a962/

Alma Flesch – 91, born in Europe, with two satisfying careers  in NYC: first as a lawyer and, post retirement, a writer, editor, and language coach. Editing work introduces me to many different subjects, as do the online courses I take. I love discussing my new-found knowledge with my children and grandchildren, though not yet with my two great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Philipps  – 80, retired elementary school teacher and geriatric social worker, now mostly busy with water color painting, but also knitting and reading more than I used to. Mother of two daughters and three grandchildren, soon to be celebrating 59 years of marriage.

Pete Philipps – 80+, refugee from Nazi Germany, grew up in New York and now living in Bethesda, MD. A retired journalist, spending time these days writing fiction, reading, gardening, cooking, listening to classical music, and doing  carpentry work around the house.

Alex Ross – 81, constant reader like Dorothy Parker (but any resemblance to her ends there, unfortunately).  Worked for more than 30 years as the head of a large university art and architecture library.  Now mostly an avid consumer of fiction and poetry, trying to repair huge gaps in my liberal education of the 1950s and ‘60s.

Judith Wasow – 70+, retired teacher and developmental researcher, now reading more than ever. Also filling my days with exercise, yoga, knitting, crafting, and puzzles. And continuing to be a wife, mother to 2 and Bubbe to 3.
